What is squalane and how does it work in skincare?
Squalane is a saturated hydrocarbon modeled after the natural squalene found in human skin. Squalene is an important component of sebum. As such, it protects the skin’s surface, regulates moisture balance, and prevents the skin from drying out. With age, the skin produces less squalene, which can lead to dryness, tightness, and a loss of suppleness.
Squalane in cosmetics fills this exact gap: It absorbs quickly, leaves no greasy film, and provides intensive care. Thanks to its stable, saturated structure, it is also very long-lasting and does not oxidize. This is a key advantage over many other skincare oils.
Chris Farrell relies on plant-derived squalane as the key active ingredient in his effective skincare line, which supports the skin’s natural functions rather than burdening them.
What can squalane do for your skin?
Squalane is a true all-rounder: It is well-tolerated, non-greasy, and suitable for nearly every skin type. Here is an overview of its key benefits:
- Intensive care without a greasy film: Squalane absorbs immediately into the skin, leaving it feeling soft and supple without any shine or heaviness. Also ideal under makeup.
- Moisture retention: Squalane can help reduce transepidermal water loss and protect the skin from drying out—a natural protective layer for the skin barrier.
- Compensates for lipid deficiency: Oily or dry skin benefits particularly from squalane, as it can replenish missing lipids and stabilize the skin barrier.
- Very well-tolerated: Squalane is considered one of the most skin-friendly care oils available. It does not irritate, does not clog pores, and is also suitable for sensitive, irritated, or redness-prone skin.
- Synergistic effect: Squalane acts as an ideal carrier for other active ingredients such as peptides, vitamin A, or plant extracts—it supports their absorption into the skin and thus enhances the overall effectiveness of the skincare product.
Who are squalane products suitable for?
Squalane is so well-tolerated that it is suitable for nearly every skin type and age. Those who benefit most include:
- Dry and low-oil skin that needs lipids and care
- Sensitive and irritated skin that needs well-tolerated active ingredients
- Mature skin whose natural squalene production is declining
- Skin prone to redness (rosacea) that seeks soothing care
- Combination and oily skin that prefers light, non-comedogenic care
- eyelids, which are particularly sensitive and require intensive care

Our skincare tips for using squalane
Tip 1 – Squalane fits into any routine
Squalane is so versatile that it can be integrated into almost any skincare routine—as a light day cream, rich night cream, or eye cream. Since it isn’t greasy and absorbs quickly, it also works great as a base under makeup.
Tip 2 – Combining squalane and peptides
Squalane acts as an ideal carrier for peptides. Products like the Gentle Rebalancing Cream, the Soft Regeneration 2, or the CPR 2 combine both active ingredients in one formula—squalane nourishes and protects, while peptides regenerate and firm.
Tip 3 – Squalane and Vitamin A
The combination of squalane and retinyl palmitate—as found in Revitam A and the Intens Vitamin Cream —is particularly effective: squalane ensures optimal absorption of vitamin A into the skin, thereby enhancing its regenerative effect.
Tip 4 – Squalane for the Eye Area
The delicate skin around the eyes benefits particularly from squalane. The CPR 1 is ideal as a daily starter treatment, while the CPR 2 serves as a more intensive regenerative treatment for mature eyelids with noticeable wrinkles.
